The Beastro | new american in hongdae

The Beastro is a well known and well hearted American bistro in Hongdae. It’s basically the Target of Western dining in Korea, everyone can take away something pretty good from it. My foodie pal Phil and I headed over there one gloriously awesome autumn day to have breakfast, cocktails and to overhear conversations in English. After living in Korea for some time, I really have begun to hate listening to stranger’s banter that I actually understand. I think I really always hated it, even back in America. Why is there something so irritating about listening to people talk about things that are not remotely about you. I’m sure I’m not alone here. Being in a restaurant and not understanding anything, living in a beautiful bubble of dumbness, there is something otherworldly about it. It’s one of the reasons I love Korea. Bubbles. My ridiculous sensitivities aside, the meal was very on the mark. I was excited before even going after reading the menu online and seeing a mushroom tart. MUSHROOM. TART. Did they know I was coming? They …

March Rabbit Salad | A Review

Finding a salad that is not bitter greens drenched in balsamic dressing in this city is hard pressed, but, not impossible anymore. As Seoul keeps its steady march into globalization, finding healthy Western food, with Western tastes in mind, is getting easier. No longer do I have to settle for pizza and pasta when I need something from back home. I can go to a place like March Rabbit Salad. This spot is just fun. Subtly playing with an Alice in Wonderland theme, this restaurant is airy and bright and cheerful. It’s impossible to miss on the streets of Sinsa, near Garosugil, with all the money they spent on bright yellow paint. I love it, though, as it takes the food seriously, but the interior remains whimsical. The menu ain’t half bad either. It’s crammed full of salads (you can design your own), sandwiches, and juices. Everything is fresh and well seasoned. This place is great for the vegetarians and vegans who roam among us. There are options for all. My one and only gripe is that I’d love …

OM Restaurant & Bar | A Review

I would love to say that I’m so dedicated to finding amazing food that I traveled all the way from Gangnam to Samcheongdong JUST to eat Indian food I read about on the internet. Honestly, though, I love Samcheongdong so it doesn’t take much to get me up there. Sure its crazy busy but there are just so many shops and cafes and galleries…it’s basically heaven, exactly what I think about when I think about how much I love Seoul. But, lets talk about OM. First off, it’s a great name. Onomatopoeia is always awesome. The foods not half bad either. We had potato samosas, chicken tandoori and palak paneer. We added some jasmine rice, garlic naan and Phil had a strawberry lassi for kicks and giggles. The samosas were very much right up my alley. Lots of spices inside with the potato and a crispy outside. My only gripe is that there were only two. An order should come with at least three. (Opinions are solely my own. No one is paying me to express …

What to Eat | near garosugil

By far my most popular blog post to date is a little list I made about a year ago called, Garosugil: Making a To-Eat-There List.   The post is simple, I just took pictures of random restaurants and cafes around Sinsa dong that I found one day while aimlessly walking around.  Then I posted them altogether for prosperity. Good thing for me that the area is so popular because it’s really brought a lot of traffic to my little blog! And this is one of my favorite areas to just walk around aimlessly. Yes, the main street is simply atrocious, but just one street over on either side and it becomes just pleasant and fun. So, as a thank you to those who’ve checked out the previous post, I’ve decided to do an update with a new list of restaurants, addresses and maps. You know, helpful things that I didn’t bother to include in the first post.

Brew 3.14 | A Review

Saturday night is reserved for pizza. Most nights can be reserved for pizza but I decided that it was Saturday last week. Phil and I headed down to Brew 3.14, which just happens to be owned by the Seoul Eats founder, Daniel Gray. Seoul Eats is the blog for info on all things related to food for us expats.  There are food tours and reviews galore on the page if would like to peruse it. Phil and I didn’t have any pizza off the standard menu, which is quite short but I like that in a restaurant.  We ordered the special, white spinach pizza and a cheese calzone. The pizza is on fire.  The crust is thin and crispy, the ingredients are well paired and I really enjoyed it. We got a bruschetta freebie to dip our crusts into and it tasted fresh and aromatic. It was a really great addition. We washed it down with a couple of craft beer Namsan Pilsners which were de-lish. If I lived on the north side I’d be there once a week. Sadly …

Savory French Toast

I’m not even joking, if a restaurant made this meal for me I’d happily shell out 20 bucks for it. (This is, of course, going by Western food prices in Korea.) This is one of the best brunch foods I’ve ever made and for good reason. Most of the time if I go into the kitchen I don’t really have much of a plan. At times I use recipes and I adjust and change them to fit my needs, tastes and available ingredients pretty much at a whim.  But, today, I researched the best way to make a crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside French toast. I went to a bakery 15 minutes from my home because I knew they had for real rustic French bread. I thought about what vegetables would taste the best with the eggy bread. I thought about what type of “syrup” was needed. So, the bottom line is, thinking about things ahead of time really paid off here. It’s amazing and pretty much my own recipe.  Bragginess :D. …

|Revisiting| Chloris Tea Room

Click the picture to see my original review of Chloris Tea Rooms! I promised to go back to Chloris and try their breakfast/brunch and, unlike my exercise/my not eating white rice/my sweeping my floor everyday promises,  I actually made good on that promise! The breakfast foods are not spectacular, but in all honesty, not that bad. I would certainly eat them again since the place is close and it’s actual Western food. The eggs Benedict had perfectly poached eggs, bacon and the addition of a tomato, which I quite liked. The sauce was meh. Not flavorful, a bit too thick for my tastes and just not that memorable.  I kept thinking if they roasted the tomato and added some salt and pepper to the sauce, it would have elevated to taste up to pretty damn good. The french toast was amazing…best thing they had. It is not that hard to make French toast but its amazing how soggy some of it can be if the cook isn’t careful. This french toast, made from a thick …

Le Brunchic | A Review

I got it into my head that I just had to try this place after I saw it reviewed on A Fat Girl’s Food Guide to Eating in Korea. I love her blog and all its tidbits about restaurants in Korea as well as recipes. If she liked this brunch, I was pretty confident it was real western food. I only have a couple minor complaints and I’ll just get them out of the way first. This brunch place has amazing decoration. Again, its modern and industrial, like so many of the more trendier places popping up. But there’s not view because its in the basement of a mall. An amazingly beautiful mall. But, a mall nonetheless. Now having googled the restaurant, I see there is a branch in Sinsa-dong on the street level.  I’ll be trying that one next :D. Second, and more importantly, don’t let people order the monstrosity I saw a couple order right next to me.This couple,  who were obviously in the very early stages of dating and super cute, tortured …
