After taking a healthy hiatus from blogging, I’ve returned ever so gently with a blog about food.  I took a jaunt over to Japan for Christmas this year and ate some amazing things. I travel to eat in a new location. You too? We are probably very cool. Just like you, I spend more time researching food and restaurants than possibly anything else before a vacation. I will gladly leave a monument early to get to a restaurant rated well on Tripadvisor. You can learn a world of things with just a picture of food. So I spent a good deal of my very precious time usually reserved for rewatching 30 Rock to research all the amazing food I could shove in my mouth in Kyoto. The city of Kyoto is breathtaking. It looks like a fairy tale, it’s immaculate and people have manners. Sushi Shi-ro | A Review

On some occasions, it is permissible to eat about 5 pounds of white rice, right? What if that rice is topped with some of the best sushi I have found in beautiful Seoul? Well, either way, that rice went into my mouth. I was really pleased with our meal at Shi-ro! I think it can be difficult to find a mid-range price point sushi restaurant with quality leaps and bounds above the conveyor belt sushi. Each piece was made well, nothing fell apart and everything had a distinctive taste. The salmon, trout and herring melted in my mouth. I loved the mixed rice bowl full of salmon, urchin egg, crab and clam. And the abalone that had been seared was the first time I’ve ever tasted abalone that wasn’t steamed…divine. The atmosphere was really special. It is located on the second floor and they can open up the entire wall to a great view of the street below. The seating is around the chef preparation area so you can see everything being made. They work quickly …

Japanese Sushi Bar |Hyundai Department Store Food Court|

  Rich people’s malls are not like your mall. That’s what I learned by my couple of experiences at Hyundai Department Store. Besides there being your run of the mill luxury items: Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, etc…They have amazing food experiences. The grocery store is mystical and there are about two clerks per every customer (only slight exaggeration) who watch your every move in case you may decide to buy something and there might be some method in which they can assist you immediately. They also have amazing food counters. Fresh, amazing foods are coming out of its ears. Their “food court” is loaded with homemade baked goods like mile high pies, 60,000 won abalones, cow meat that would cost me about 1/2 a month’s pay…. it’s pretty amazing. They also have sushi conveyor belts, because, why not? So after a long day of eating and shopping…it was time to have a “snack” of sushi. Because, why not? It’s not amazing sushi but it will do in a pinch.

I am inspired to write this post because I began watching Jiro Dreams of Sushi this morning and realized I hadn’t yet posted my sushi review from last weekend. More on the documentary below if you’re interested. Expats find it very difficult to find decent sushi in Korea. It seems so strange. Geographically we are a hop, skip and a jump to Japan. Japanese people come and own restaurants here, even with the cloud of tension that still hangs in the air between the two nationalities in the older generations. But, to find sushi that hasn’t been mucked up by “Korean” tastes it very challenging. Sorry, Korea, I don’t mean to be so insulting to your tastes all the time. But, there’s only so much mayo, pickled things and other condiments that one person can take. It’s bad when added to Western food en masse and even worse when added to something that should be as simple as sushi. But, Gatten Sushi, a Japanese franchise with a restaurant located in Gangnam has a fairly good selection …
