Hoonje(훈제) ori(오리) | Smoked Duck

After walking around Insadong galleries and building up a monstrous appetite (doesn’t take much), I convinced Phil we needed to try a back alley, old school, touristy Korean restaurant. I’ve wanted to try one for so long and I did have to push a bit because Phil has Korean food everyday. But, I really don’t so I was desperate for some. Aaaand….I’m pretty pushy. Back alley restaurant it was!

Reminiscing | Christmas 2013

In three days (WHAT?! Packing! Presents! Cats!) I am heading home for a short visit for the Christmas holiday . Even though my cats have decided that the piece of luggage I pulled out to pack is their new jungle gym, I am really excited. Christmas in my family home is laidback, carefree and full of food. We don’t sit down at an elegantly decked out table and nothing is hands-off or formal. For the family party there are always multiple casseroles, kids, dogs, presents, lots of coffee and free wheeling dining habits. There is no “kid’s table” its more “wherever you sit is your seat.” There is no real schedule, its just when people feel like doing things. That’s how Christmas should be, according to me. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas too, wherever your world may be!! I hope its just your style.

Julio’s Mexican Cuisine |A Review|

After a brief hiatus from updating the blog, I’m back with a food review because, well, they’re the easiest!  I’ve made it my personal mission to get out and explore something new this weekend but, as of now, I’m sat comfy in my bed watching old episodes of Black Books and drinking a heavy dose of coffee to get through writing this simple review :D. I’ve already gone over my affinity for Mexican food in my review for Vatos Tacos. To sum up my Vatos experience: I was disappointed. When I asked for recommendations for other dishes at Vatos I was told to order mostly Korean Fusion Mexican food (like the kimchi fries…fries? At a Mexican place?  Meh.) .  I don’t mind fusion food at all, I cook it often in my own kitchen, but it had left me with no restaurant to call my own Mexican sanctuary. Pier 17 | A Review

  Just a bit of a disclaimer: From what I can remember of Cajun food, this place delivered. It’s been a while for me, even back in America I didn’t often eat Jambalaya or have seafood boils. It’s not a huge thing in Missouri. However, as a persnickety food person, this place was everything I hoped it to be. I’ve been wanting to visit Pier 17 for over a year. I read a review and could never find anyone to go with me or had, for some reason, always chosen to go elsewhere instead. I made up my mind that before summer blissfully packed it’s bags on the way out the door I would visit this American soul food restaurant. The awesome: The menu had the things I wanted to see. Poboys. Jambalaya. Gumbo. Seafood. I would have been happy if the menu just had those things. When I walked in the place smelled of Old Bay seasoning. That was what I think I first noticed. Brooklyn: the burger joint |A Review|

I am probably 1 1/2 years late in reviewing this place. This is the cat’s pajamas. The bees knees. The whatever of foodie meccas in Seoul. Errrrbody loves Brooklyn. There are hundreds thousands millions of reviews online (big ones, small ones, itsy bitsy blurbs) about the holy grail of burgers in the world of kimchi. But, this was my first ever visit so the world is getting one more review. 😀

|Jeju Island’s| Famous Black Pork

Ahh, my glorious trip to Jeju Island. Let’s begin where we will all be happy…the pork, Heuk dwaeji. In recent months, I’ve really tried to cut back on my meat intake at home, I rarely ever have it now. I like to save my protein for when it really counts, and this pork really counts. Heuk dwaeji is  a delicacy of the island and you can generally only find it here or some select specialty restaurants on the mainland. The pork is from a small, domesticated black pig. The meat is flavored by smoking it with hay before its ever cooked. The pieces are tender, buttery and full of fat. It makes for unbelievably delicious bite after bite. You don’t ever want it to end. As 1/3 of our party is allergic/had a traumatic experience with fish and seafood this was the only Jeju specialty we were able to eat on our vacation. Not that I’m complaining (that much). Dak Galbi | 닭갈비

The World’s Most Perfect Dish? I realize I’m prone to exaggeration but this is possibly the world’s most perfect dish. Spicy chicken and vegetables cooked on fire & brimstone right in front of you. It’s a mix of divine intervention and …. chicken. It’s other worldly. Has this convinced you to go ahead and eat this masterpiece? I hope so. Basically, eating dak galbi should be on your bucket list in and outside of Korea. Just find a way to get your hands on it. The other best thingz about dak galbi is that you can find it just about anywhere in Korea, you  can share it with a ton of people, add so many different things (ramen, cheese rice cakes, cheese, seafood, etc…) and it is quite an inexpensive meal. A basic dish will cost you around 18,000 to 20,000 won for two people. Take that, pizza! (Just kidding, pizza, you know I ❤ you.) After you eat most of your meal you can ask for some rice (bokkeumbap) and they will fry it up with the …
